The Humane Society of Greene County is dedicated to finding good homes for homeless dogs and cats through our shelter, and to stopping abuse of animals in Greene County.
All of the calendars are sold and the Humane Society is grateful for your support for the calendar sales fundraising project.

Due to an increase in the number of large animal abuse investigations and rescues, the shelter needs a 14 foot by 16 foot (or about that size) stock trailer as well as foster homes for the large animals.

It is with sadness that we share the passing of our long time Humane Society mascot, Gemini. Those of us who were fortunate to know Gem, miss her very much. 1998(?) to December 2011.
It's the holiday season. Lights, decorations, Christmas trees, poinsettias and holiday foods are everywhere. For your pet, those tempting unknowns could cost you an expensive trip to the veterinarian if you are not careful. Follow these tips to ensure a safe and fun holiday season.
When your pet gives that sad look, begging for food, it is hard to say no. But please, do not feed your pet any holiday food. Dogs and cats do not realize that a piece of hard candy can choke them, and snagging a few pieces, or pounds, of chocolate can be deadly. Even popcorn harms your pet. That turkey bone left over from dinner is just as bad for your pet as it is for you. Your dog might lick its lips or your cat might hang around, but the bone can get stuck in their throats or shred their intestines. Do not feed them any type of butter or meat. If you give your pet a special treat, give them one that is pet friendly.
Do not leave your pets outside in the cold for extended periods of time--it can be dangerous. If they are outside, make sure they have plenty of water.
Your house might be filled with people your pet doesn't know, and that can be very scary. Instead of leaving them outside to freeze or escape, make sure they are in a secure place to reduce stress: in a quiet room or in a kennel with a blanket covering the cage. They might still be terrified of the noise and strangers, so don't give them access to run away.
Your decorations look beautiful, but for curious pets, they are dangerous. The focal point of many houses is the Christmas tree, which is typically covered in lights, tinsel, or ornaments. Keep your pet away! Eating pine needles or drinking the tree water causes stomach irritation. Consider buying an artificial tree. If you do not like artificial trees, take extra precaution.
The same goes for poinsettias or mistletoe. They might look delicious to your animals, but in reality, these holiday plants are poisonous.
Place anything shiny like ornaments, tinsel, glass bulbs, or anything that sparkles out of your pets' direct line of sight. If you have any exposed wires, your pet might chew the chords and get electrocuted. Try to hide exposed wires under a rug.
Make the holidays a good time for both you and your pet!
If you have any other questions, feel free to contact the Humane Society at 724-627-9988.

Here is our Winter 2011-2012 newsletter in PDF for you to download. It is about 3 mB in size. If you would like to receive our quarterly newsletter, by mail and/or e-mail, click here to send us an e-mail. Be sure to tell us the following:
You can also use our e-mail address to send us e-mail, or you can call us at the shelter.
Some of our supporters participate in our Buy a Brick program. There is a brick wall at the shelter, and for $100 you can add a brick to it. The brick will have an inscription of your choosing. This is a good way to present your family to other animal lovers, memorialize someone who loved animals, or put the name of your business in front of the public. Go to the Buy a Brick page to find out more about this way to support the Humane Society of Greene County.
The Humane Society of Greene County Pennsylvania is a non-profit organization that exists solely on donations. The number of lost, abandoned, and abused animals that come through the doors every year is 1,300! We are far above the national average in the number of animals we save every year!
Our push to get animals adopted by Christmas is over, but our work is never done. We always have cats and dogs available for adoption at the Humane Society. In fact, this cold winter makes it even more important that we find homes for them, because there are many domestic animals struggling to survive in a world where they cannot live in the wild. We need your financial support, but, just as much, we need you to adopt an animal and tell your friends about us. Don't go to strangers, darling, come to me, because I Will Always Love You (take a look at this video).
The Humane Society, in conjunction with Greene County Community Service, is building houses or boxes for needy dogs and cats. The Humane Society is accepting donations of used or new 2 x 4 boards, sheet lumber, and wooden doors for this project. Should you have questions, call the Humane Society at 724-627-9988. This is a way for our supporters to clear out their garages, barns, and basements while helping both their neighbors and their neighbors' pets. This is a project that costs little but will deliver a lot for some of the animals in our county.
You can contact us about our yearly summary data report for information about our annual operation.
Without ongoing donations, the Humane Society cannot stay open. It is the only place of refuge for the abandoned and abused animals in a rural county with a large animal population. You can help the shelter continue to work on behalf of the animals that have nothing.
Making tax-deductible donations is convenient and easy. Our :Power of Ten program gives supporters ways to help us now and in the future.

Danny was rescued from starving to death on a chain. Now he weighs 81 lbs. and he sleeps on the couch at his new home.
To become a member of the Power of Ten Club, arrange to donate $10 a month or more. You can use the secure and easy electronic funds transfer that can automatically make a deduction for you. It is simple to disenroll at any time, should you have a change of circumstances.

There's no need to be in the doghouse. If you have one lying around, bring it to us. We can use it. Here is a flyer to tell you about our new program in which we adopt a doghouse. Or you can call the shelter about it.
We are always in need of good quality dog food, and now, cat food as well. Many of the animals that come to us are badly undernourished. The quality of food is important in their recovery. There is a drop box outside our facility where donations can be left during hours that the shelter is not open. Please consider feeding an animal in need. Just look at the results we are getting!
The Humane Society is happy to take used dog boxes or dog houses. You can drop them off near our front gate, even if the shelter is not open. Humane Police Officers use dog houses for needy dogs in their care. If you had more dogs at one time than you now have, we are happy to reduce the clutter around your home by recycling your used dog house, box, or cage.
We now also need used or new baby crib mattresses, and we need a new or used dishwasher.
Thank You !
These were the FACES of animals in need. They came through our doors and, with your help, each of them found a loving home. Join our Power of Ten Club. Send just $10.00 a month, less than the cost of a pizza, and many more lives like those of these two pups will be saved.
Tucker and Gem and their friends say "THANK YOU!"
The Humane Society joins forces with Waynesburg College Bonner students Stephanie and Jennifer, to bring smiles to Rolling Meadow residents with Gem, the shelter mascot.

Your used ink jet or laser printer cartridges can help the Humane Society. Turn them in to us at the shelter, or at the Humane Society bin at the Waynesburg Giant Eagle, and we can get money for them to use for animal care. We can accept all but Epson cartridges. You can clear out your home or office, recycle to reduce waste, and help the Society, all in one simple act. Contact the shelter for more information.
We will do our best to match you with a pet that fits the way you live and the resources you have to bring to the relationship with a pet.
We temperament-test our dogs to screen out those that are not ready for life with people.
If you are unsatisfied with a dog or cat that you adopt from us, we will take it back.
We would also like to mention that the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania requires that all animals that we send for adoption must be neutered. This is how the state tries to ensure that the number of stray cats and dogs does not increase.
Most Greene County residents, and our neighbors, know us for the pets that we offer for adoption, and perhaps for our requests for money (we are not regularly funded by any government agency at any level). We hope that more of you get to know us for our second function, education, and that you get the opportunity to hear us at an animal show, or at school, or that you may attend our dog obedience classes when we can again present them.
Sometimes you will find our animals available for adoption at
in Washington, PA.
